We recently got the chance to interview Bill Marshall, the editor of "The Pie 2." I discovered the video while lurking the SLAP forum, and was immediately ensnared by the dark imagery, hilarious movie snippets, homie b-roll, and raw New Jersey skateboarding beaming out of my laptop. Upon finding out that Bill was the main editor and creative director of the film, in addition to having a stand out part, I took the opportunity to ask him some questions about making the video. His answers give us but a small glimpse into the Jersey-sludge-drenched, alcohol-fueled, and all-for-fun style of skating captured in "The Whoopie Pie 2." Enjoy.

Where are you from?

I’m from Toms River, NJ, better known to the world as the town people drive through to get to the “Jersey Shore.” I live about 5 minutes from the actual house where they film the show, yes it sucks.

So does that mean you get all the gutter overflow of Jersey Slores?

The Jersey Slores are everywhere. I steer clear of those fools unless I’m really fiending a Midway cheesesteak. I have a nice Jersey girl that is nothing like a Meatball, or whatever the fuck those idiots call themselves, that I can make fun of these people with.

How did you come up with the name “The Whoopie Pie”? What is a whoopie pie?

You’ve never seen a whoopie pie? It’s like the worst possible thing a human could eat. “A confection of two small and flat chocolate pastries with cream in the middle.” The first time I saw one, I just laughed at how absurd it was, so the name kinda just stuck. My boss thought it was some weird reference to a vagina after sex. I guess we can go ahead and say that’s what it means too. Oh yeah and it’s ‘Whoopi’ because for the first one I just got a bunch of photos of Whoopi Goldberg together and threw pies at them. I guess I’m a weirdo, whatever.

Honestly, I think anyone would have to be out of their minds to question the cathartic validity of pie-ing photographs of Whoopie Goldberg... Any unique memories from making “Pie” that you would like to share?

The whole experience was essentially a huge zorch tube of hangovers, beers, and attempts to skate, but if I have to mention one: I had just stumbled upon a slew of various whiskies from my parents’ house and decided to bring a bunch of them up to my house with Nico, Matt Eaton, and Cusmano. I started drinking in the basement just listening to music super loud until Nico got back. We started raging and just being idiots. After a while we both were pretty lit up and I decided to pour a bottle into Nico’s mouth, but he warned me, “Dude if you do it, I’m going to barf everywhere.” In my drunken stupor I told him “Whatever dude just barf on me.” And to make a long story short, I did it and he threw up all over my shirt. A year later on moving day, that shirt was still laying in the corner of our basement.

I hope someone found and saved that artifact. you should have put in in a time capsule and buried it in the yard... Were there any videos that directly inspired “Whoopie Pie 2”?

Nothing really stands out as “directly inspired” to me, but I guess with all the random movie tidbits and what not, you can say the Slave video is similar. I just wanted to share my infatuation with absolute dog shit movies along with some skateboarding.

You say dogshit, I say cult horror b movies. That’s actually what I really liked about the video. splicing in the most absurd shots of gore and blood in with the normal skate video subject matter. the clips you chose pretty much brought another level of entertainment value and a fun feel to the video.

I only say dogshit because that is what most people think of those movies. I, on the other hand, find them fucking brilliant, so I’m glad you can appreciate them for the great pieces of cinema they are along with me.

Can you tell us how you decided on what films / clips to sample? Were they exclusively from the massive horror movie collection Japhey Dow told me you have?

Most of the clips I decided on were from favorites of mine. Yes they were from my absurdly too large movie collection, and I wonder why I am so broke. Most of the clips chosen for people’s parts were in correlation to movies I associated with that person or I knew they were psyched on it. Like Dillon for instance, he is obsessed with ‘Point Break.’ Obsessed to the point that he wants me to go with him to get ‘Point Break’ tattoos. Hence, his part is littered with clips from the movie.

What movie was the clip where the guy falls and morphs into little monsters from? That clip is epic. I was showing the video to a friend and he was rewinding it over and over...

‘The Gate’ dude. Such a good demonic flick. The sequel is rad as fuck too. Apparently Bill S. Preston esquire from ‘Bill and Ted’ is remaking it. Totally excellent.

Did you go to school for video or film? How did you get into videography & film?

What’s that quote from ‘Animal House?’ Oh yeah, “Seven years of college down the drain. Might as well join the fucking peace corps!” Yes, I am currently taking my sweet time studying film at Montclair State University.

What is your favorite part of the video-making process?

For this video in particular, my favorite part was just being there and actually being involved with everything that was going on: skating, boozing, chilling with the homies, and actually making the video. There was a point where we all pretty much lived together in a house we rented. That whole era was just one of the greatest experiences ever; filled with so many nights and things I barely remember. But in general when I’m making a video/film or whatever, my favorite part is post-work, like editing and watching everything come together. I’m not super into filming because I’d rather be skating, but I do also enjoy shooting Super 8. My inner art fag has to come out in some way I guess.

I noticed the obligatory super 8 sprinkled in the video. It’s awesome to me that when you’re filming a skate video with your friends your documenting a group of people’s lives for that time period. Your video was littered with little party clips and antics, I really like seeing b-roll spliced into videos like that its what makes homie videos stand out.

Agreed. I really wanted it to have that ‘friendly’ feel to it. The resulting footage of parties, b-roll, and what not, are just snipits of our lives, so I think it really helped make it feel like the homie video we all wanted it to be.

What was it like putting together the film and also having a part in it? How did you balance these two different roles?

Roles? This is a homie video, a video we all collectively decided on making. Just 100% pure fun. We all skate together and chill together so it pretty much just happened. We’ve talked about making it for a few years, but until I fucked my knee up I didn’t have the time to sit around and put it together. So my knee getting destroyed was a kinda blessing in disguise. Balancing the two roles didn’t really ever come into my mind while I was making it. I skate and I love to edit videos, so it just works out; when you’re not doing one, you can be doing the other.

Does your experience in video production influence your skating?

Not really. What I skate and how I skate is purely influenced by my friends and just hanging around pounding beers saying “Hell yeah we should probably skate that.” Usually after the latter, we struggle to get things done, but we know how to balance the two out. Party on dude. Skating with people like Nico, Dillon, Rozbo, and Matt Eaton is seriously one of the most mind boggling experiences. They are all so good and every time I watch them skate I am just in awe. They make me want to skate so much harder than I do. They all should be the biggest people in skateboarding right now. Anyone that has skated with them would definitely agree.

Who supported the film and helped make it possible? Who filmed the majority of the video?

The video was pretty much funded by us as a group, but Chris Nieratko and Steve Lenardo from NJ Skateshop gave us $300 to get the DVDs printed up. So many filmers contributed to this video, but really, without BJ Wishard, this video never would have happened. I’d say 85% of the video was filmed by him. He always drives us around and takes everyone to new spots without hesitation, even with his giant, gas guzzling Ford Explorer. He’s a good dude to have around when you have no idea where spots are.

Do you have plans to make another full length skate film?

We’ve talked about making a part 3, but for right now my buddy BJ is making a video of his own called ‘Feelin’ Friendly,’ so most of the new footage is going towards that, and we are hopefully making a NJ Skateshop video in the near future.

Why do you think independent video productions are important in skateboarding?

A serious question eh? For me personally, I like homie videos and local videos so much more than big company videos. It keeps the local scenes psyched on what’s going on and let’s you see what each place has to offer. Whenever I go on trips and stop at local shops, the first thing I look for is local videos or that shop’s video. It’s so much more refreshing to see new spots and kids you’ve never heard of.

Did you know you were having last part in the Foundation flow video?

No, not at all. The Foundation TM asked me to send him footage for a flow section for the ‘WTF!’ video, but he told me he wasn’t positive it would be used because it was up to the discretion of the editor. So I assumed since pretty much everyone on Foundation is gnarly as all hell, I didn’t stand a chance of being in it. I woke up one morning and my buddy Rozbo texted me telling me how psyched he was on the section and I was clueless. Definitely an awesome surprise for sure, thanks F!

That gap you blast was definitely a sick spot to find.

Haha I was scared for my life bailing away into that thing. The only 'sick' thing about it was how sketchy it made my stomach feel on every attempt.

Although Chris Nieratko has gotten softer in his age, he’s still one of our favorite dudes because he writes about the shit we care about: skateboarding and porn. He’s the only writer in skateboarding who can get away with asking Eric Koston where he puts his boogers after he picks his nose or a young Corey Duffel why he looks like a girl. In the 90′s, Chris was the editor of Big Brother, a beloved skate mag owned by Larry Flynt with no rules and very little censorship. It’s been talked about to death already, but fuck it, the stories are top notch and anything involving skateboarding and Larry Flynt you probably want to hear about.

As editor of Big Brother, you had access to ridiculous amounts of porn. I heard you used to trade it for tattoos, drugs and other shit.
Yeah, I would trade porn DVD’s for boxes of booze, cases of beer, anything you can think of. When we used to go on skate tours I would send boxes ahead to each stop. Like I’d call the skateshop and find out, who’s the pill dealer, who’s the guy that can take me fishing, and I’d just send boxes ahead of myself so by the time I got there it was already sorted out. I had my interns call ahead, handle it for me.

That’s insane.
You gotta understand the internet wasn’t like it was now where everything is free and accessible. People then, at least in porn, thought they could charge. Some VHS tapes were going for like $50, $60. It’s hard to believe, but this is 10+ years ago. I’ve seen a Jenna Jameson VHS go for like $80. So if I’m sending you 10 videotapes, I just sent you like $600 worth of videos and if I’m sending them to you in somewhere like Utah, where they can’t even get videos that have penetration in them, now I just sent you a priceless gift.

Now, I think of porn DVD’s as useless.. it’s like $1… $2..
I tried offering it to some guys the other day, the Etnies tour passed and I asked if they needed any DVD’s for the road. But with like, Redtube and Youjizz, there’s all the free sites in the world and you don’t have to carry a DVD around. It’s obsolete. But, I still got a guy in the liquor store that trades me liquor for DVD’s. Truckers buy that stuff, cause they don’t have WIFI in their trucks. But everyone just has a smart phone now man, you can be watching porno anywhere.

How come you like Hitler so much?
Oh, I hate Hitler, he’s a piece of shit. But just like a banana peel or a rubber chicken, Hitler is a great comedic device. He’s a complete piece of shit but you look at him and ask, how did anyone take this guy seriously? He just looks so goofy. I bet if I showed my kid one of his videos, he would just start giggling, that would be your natural reaction.

In Cali you used to live in a house in the ghetto right?
Yeah, 31st and Crenshaw. Full house, really dope. My roommates were shit scared, so they were hardly around. The first day I moved in I made sure the neighbors knew I had guns, they were cool after that.

What, you had some plastic guns?
No, no. I have a lot of guns. The first day, I was given some crazy looks. I also had a red El Camino at the time. I guess I was on a Crips block, because the first day I pull up with this red car, and they are mad dogging me. Like, what’s up with the car? I was like I don’t understand the question. And they were like, “yo your car is red,” and I was like, “yes, my car is red.” He then tugs on his blue whatever, thinking I belong to the rival gang cause of the color of my car. I was just like, dude it’s just a red car.

Sounds sketchy.
There was a fried chicken place right around the corner from my house. Later on, a new fried chicken place was opening across the street. The day before the new one opens, the old one “mysteriously” just burnt down. It was a pretty great neighborhood.

After that you slept on the floor of the Big Brother office?
Yeah for more then a year I slept in my office. It got to a point where my roommates were too scared to live in the hood anymore, so I just put all my stuff in storage. Got a pillow and a blanket and slept on the office floor. Big Brother had its own suite. I used to be so callous with it, I’d just walk down the hallway in boxer shorts with a towel around my neck and brush my teeth in the bathroom we shared with all the offices on the floor. It was absurd. I was questioned a few times why I would sign in at 11:00 and not be signing out.

What is some other cool shit you got to get away with as editor of Big Brother magazine?
I used to pull this scam because I was homesick while I was living in California. I would get some record label to fly me home to Jersey for the weekend, just to interview one of their artists. I could have fully interviewed them over the telephone from Cali, but Big Brother had such limited space for music, and the labels wanted to be in there so badly. So I was just strong arming record labels, I was just like, “there’s only 2 pages for music… so everybody’s fighting for it.” (nobody was fighting for it) So I’d get this label to fly me home to Jersey, interview the band and then I’d party with my friends all weekend.

Any specific bands you remember flying in to interview?
Yeah this one shitty band, they had like a half hit wonder, not even a full hit. I remember the title because it was so stupid. “Heaven is a Halfpipe”. The show was supposed to be in NYC, and I was going to interview them but it got canceled and moved to the next location, New Paltz. I nearly killed my buddy that night driving.

How’d you kill your buddy?
This is when I’m at my absolute worst with drugs and alcohol. After the show we were driving back to his house and I was just black out, I shouldn’t have been behind the wheel. It was really dumb. I was on this dark country road. It went to the right, and I just went straight and launched up this hill and Dukes of Hazzard jumped a car. I came down on the nose, airbags popped open, I didn’t even have a seatbelt on. It was probably my saving grace because I had leather interior so I kind of slid to the back like a wet noodle. My friend was stuck there, I had to rip his seatbelt off. I don’t know how murderers do it, because I nearly killed my friend and it’s going on near 10 years and still eats me alive.

Has anyone recently refused to do an interview with you?
I don’t think now a days anyone is too scared of Chris Nieratko. I’ve mellowed out in my age because magazines won’t allow the advertiser to get their feathers ruffled, so the things I can ask have been limited. Although in the new issue of Skateboard Mag, Omar Salazar and I were talking about child labor at the Nike factories and how many Dunks you can make out of dead baby flesh. Those little things I can get in make me happy. I can get maybe like get one question that makes my heart sing.

Will skate mags ever let you print more of that type of shit?
For print, it will remain vanilla until the death of print. It’s gotten to the point because we are in a recession and money is hard to come by, people have to bow to the advertisers. I think that’s why Thrasher is doing so well, the voice of the magazine has always been the voice of the magazine. The internet is the wild wild west though. Anything goes. I love the Slap message boards, it’s just honest opinions, you don’t get a whole lot of that in the written word in skateboarding. Those dudes, they talk like me and my friends at the skateshop.

What about all the money from these big brand companies?
A lot of these big dollar sponsors, that aren’t seeing a lot of recouping on their dollar, are eventually gonna pull out. They have to, I can tell you just on sales in my store some of these big shoe brands are not making their stockholders happy, so they will be tired of not hitting quota in skateboarding and eventually pull the plug. What scares me is how many of our core brands that have stood to this point, some 15, 20 year footwear brands, how many of those are we going to lose along the way? That’s the scary part.. we see eS is already done, I could probably name 3 or 4 that are barely holding on. How many more are gonna have to go?

I heard a rumor that you don’t even skateboard.

1. One night in new brunswick, some chick asked me and nico if we wanted to do some blow
so we go up to her room and then she said “alright wheres the blow”
and we said “what the fuck are you talking about”
then we proceeded to break every mirror in her home
Ended up with 10 stitches

2. The first night I met Erik and everyone;
some house party in north jersey.
an hour after i met the dude
we were peeing into cracked windows
of all the lexus’s parked out on the driveway.
after we got kicked out
We proceeded to knock off all the mirrors on the way out.

3. Party in colts neck
at some un named chicks house
around 3 in the morning
threw all her parents pool furniture in her pool
broke out the pool lights
Then in the morning got woken up by nico
to go to back to the banks in nyc
So we took all the left over beer
then threw all of her house plants in her dish washer
turned it on and left.
She never talked to me again

4. This isnt really a house,

invited us to a junkyard party.

He told us we could break anything.
upon arrival we passed everyone at the party,
ventured into the junkyard.

Walked down some trail and came up on
a Ford Taurus parked next to a bunch of other cars.

Within 1 minute and 3o seconds the car was
comepletly destroyed and unusable.

crain through the windshield.

The car was totaled, the next thing we know
the owner of the joint comes up and says

and as we were still smashing shit

were partying at this kids house in South Jersey.
We smash his living room TV
and he thought it would be cool to
